| There was a time when Judy Cohoon was a very active person, enjoying tennis, biking, aerobics, and more. But three surgeries in one year sidelined her at age 47, and the only thing that remained healthy was her appetite. No longer able to exercise, she had resigned herself to being overweight. Then Judy learned a fun 30-minute workout program at a place called Curves, which was coming to her area. She kept checking, waiting for the doors to open. After her mother gave her up to be raised by various relatives who also made her feel unwanted, Barbie K. Reed felt an emptiness filled only by food. Despite a family history of hypertension, diabetes, and much more, she was emotionally unable to deal with her ballooning weight and the health problems it portended. Her wake-up call literally came in the middle of the night, when she learned that her obese mother was found lying on the floor of her nursing home, dead at age 68. Approaching 50, Barbie could see her not-too-distant future. Curves helped give her a new focus and change that picture. |
